46 Miles For A Cause! Help Kids Beat Cancer!

Hi Everyone :)

I have decided that I am going to walk a total of 46 miles before September 13.

For those of you who may not know, I hold a special place in my heart for THON. THON is a charity that I am completely passionate about. I have seen first hand just what the money raised for THON and the Four Diamonds Fund does.

THON is the largest student-run philanthropy in the world! Penn State students come together every February for a 46 hour no sitting, no sleeping dance marathon held at the Bryce Jordan Center. As a Penn State alum, I can honestly say that this is without a doubt the best thing I could have ever participated in. I am still very active in THON today and am always bringing awareness about the cause. We dance so no parent ever has to hear the words "your child has cancer" ever again.

Since 1973, THON has raised over $100M For The Kids (FTK)! I have seen first hand the impact this has on families. I have met our THON families. They are the most down-to-Earth and compassionate people I have ever met.

The money raised for THON goes directly to our THON families. Because of THON, no family has to pay a medical bill. They don't have to pay for housing while their child is at Hershey Medical Center for treatments/hospital stays. They don't have to worry about food. Everything is covered. Parents are able to put all their energy and focus into their child becoming healthy and beating this terrible disease.

The remainder of the money raised by THON goes to cancer research and bringing in activities for the kids, one being music therapy. Just to break it down a little:

$60 covers one hour of child life coverage
$150 covers one day of outpatient treatment for Leukemia
$750 covers one experiment at Penn State’s Children Hospital in search of a cure

Now, I know what you're thinking; if THON isn't until February, why am I walked 46 miles by September 13?

Last year I decided to step up and bring awareness of THON to my hometown. For as big as THON is, there aren't too many people outside of State College, PA who know about it. I planned a Help Kids Beat Cancer! benefiting THON fundraiser, and it was a success! I had a lot of fun planning the whole thing and coming up with different activities for kids to do.

I decided to make this an annual thing, and so the 2nd annual Help Kids Beat Cancer! benefiting THON fundraising event will be held on September 14 at Monessen City Park. There will be games for kids to play and earn prizes, a bake sale, a Chinese Auction, and even vendors! 100% of proceeds goes directly to THON.

The 46 miles I'm walking is equivalent to the 46 hours the THON dancers have to stand. I will never stop fighting for these kids. I'll never stop fighting until there is a cure for pediatric cancer. No one, especially a child, should have to go through that. The heartbreak I feel for the kids and their families is what motivates me to do more.

One day we will dance for joy. Until then, we dance for life!
FTK!

Never Stop Chasing Your Dreams

I do want to go ahead and talk to you guys about how important it is to follow your dreams no matter what it takes. This is really what the focus of today's post is all about. And truthfully, following your dreams can be very frustrating when you have lack of support, but it's so important that you keep going. When I started both my fitness and writing journeys, I had no idea where it would take me. I had no idea that one day I would have 3 books on the market for sell at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and iTunes. I had no idea that one day I would write blogs with the hope that I am helping at least one person. I definitely had no idea I would get the opportunity to work with an amazing company like IdealFit. When I first started all of this, I'm pretty sure the only person who knew everything I was doing was my husband. We have been working out together since we were sophomores in college, and I was even working out a lot longer than that. When I told him that ...

8 Years and Counting!

8 years ago, today, I had my first date with my now-husband. We went to TCBY for frozen yogurt and then back to his parents' house for a movie night. It was then I agreed to be his girlfriend. Rewind a few years ago, when I was in the student lounge at Penn State Fayette, I saw him for the first time. He had on a black and white Tapout shirt, aviator sunglasses, and a mohawk. Yeah, I had a major crush on him. I never talked to him, though. I'm normally not a shy person, but when it came to him I couldn't bring myself to even say hi.  The following semester we had English 202c together. It was the worst class we had ever taken and we kind of started bonding a little over that. From talking, I found out he works out at the campus gym every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday after class. Coming from a fitness background myself, I told him I could get him abs in 2 weeks. I couldn't, but it was a way for us to spend time together. I ended up going to the gym with ...

Get To Know Me

Hi everyone! :) A year ago I decided to take a leap and become an author. I must say, I have LOVED every minute of it! From publishing my first book, A Coal Miner's Wife , to now having the first book of my Dark Moonlight trilogy series out, I can honestly say this has been such an adventure I never knew I needed. Since this is my first blog post about being an author and my books, I thought I'd start off my kind of letting you all in on my life. My pen name is N.M. Williams, which is just my first/middle name initials, and my last name. Nothing crazy there. I live with my husband, our two beautiful, black cats, Pain and Panic, and our box turtle, Turbo. We live in a small Pennsylvania town, not far from where I grew up. My husband and I both love Disney and everything about it. In fact, we try to vacation there every couple years. On top of that, I am very much into fitness and, of course, writing! :) That pretty much sums everything up about me. All of my books are...
